Woolooware to Kurnell Tower Replacement Project

Ausgrid is planning to install two poles either side of each transmission tower located between Woolooware and Kurnell. This will enable the removal of the existing steel lattice transmission towers.

This Project involves removal and replacement of 26 transmission towers, covering about 7 kilometres. The existing lattice steel towers are over 60 years old and are coming to the end of their serviceable life. It is no longer viable to continue to maintain these current structures.

The work will predominantly be installed within an existing Ausgrid easement. However, a section of the work will be installed on road reserve along Captain Cook Drive.

This work is part of our capital works program to allow Ausgrid to maintain a safe and reliable electricity network. This work is expected to be completed in stages over a two-year period.

Community feedback will be one of the factors considered by Ausgrid as we plan the route.

Ausgrid is the approving authority for the work under the NSW Environmental Planning & Assessment Act.

As part of the approval process, we have prepared an environmental assessment known as a Review of Environmental Factors (REF) to determine the potential environmental impacts of the project.

The project has been determined for approval based on the information contained in the REF.

REF Determination Report

Construction will involve installing two concrete transmission poles within existing Ausgrid easements and along the road reserve. The new poles will be less imposing than the current tower structure.

We will be transferring the overhead cables to the new transmission towers; removing the old transmission towers, and restoring impacted areas.

2023 – 2024

• Design planning and construction tendering process

 

Late 2024

• Contract awarded and construction to commence for installation of new towers and removal and decommissioning of existing towers

 

Early 2025

• Construction continued

After completing the tendering process, Ausgrid will move into the construction planning stage, taking into consideration all environmental and community requirements as outlined in the final REF.

Construction will then involve installing the smaller, more reliable transmission poles and the decommissioning and removal of the retired poles.
