Ausgrid ASP/3 Guidelines

The ASP/3 Guidelines provide Ausgrid-authorised ASP/3s the essential specifications, requirements, and procedures needed to prepare designs that meet Ausgrid’s technical and operational standards. This easy-to-access guide replaces the Design Information – General Terms and Conditions, helping provide clarity, better alignment on expectations, and making working on our network simpler, safer, and more efficient.

Level 3 Accredited Service Providers, or ASP/3 designers, are authorised professionals in New South Wales responsible for the design of electrical supply networks, ensuring compliance with safety and technical standards.

What is an ASP/3 Designer?

ASP/3 designers are accredited by the NSW Department of Planning and Environment to carry out contestable design work on electricity distribution networks. 

They play a crucial role in planning, designing, and documenting electrical infrastructure for both public and private developments, including overhead and underground networks.

Ausgrid requires workers and sub-contractors who wish to undertake Level 3 contestable work to be authorised. You can find more information here: Authorisation - Ausgrid

Key Responsibilities

Designing Electrical Networks

  • ASP/3 designers are responsible for creating designs for new connections, powerline layouts, substations, and alterations to existing network assets.

Compliance and Safety

  • They ensure that all designs meet regulatory standards and safety requirements, providing a safe and reliable electrical supply.

Project Management

  • Many ASP/3 designers also offer project management services, coordinating between utilities, councils, and construction teams to streamline the design and implementation process.

ASP/3 Design Processes Documentation and Templates

The following design information documents enable Ausgrid Authorised Designers to prepare and submit contestable designs to Ausgrid for certification.

Contestable connection process

Contestable connections and relocation projects follow a process shown in this one page flowchart. This process is relevant for connections up to 11kV, including street lighting and the majority of asset relocations.
