Pole-mounted EV charger in Glebe

We are advancing EV infrastructure through partnerships with companies like Jolt and EVX, which have enabled us to install chargers on distribution kiosks and low-voltage poles in strategic locations. Furthermore, we have begun integrating EVs into our fleet, with plans to expand the number of EVs and fast DC charging stations at our depots.

We are actively learning and adapting our approach to the cost-effective management of electric vehicles (EVs). Additionally, we have introduced a flexible trial load tariff, providing EV customers with convenient charging options for a fixed network charge.

Ausgrid is planning to electrify 40 per cent of its fleet by 2029 and reach net zero emissions by 2050 for its Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. Find out more about our emission targets in our Sustainability Report.

Channel 7 News - Ausgrid heavy vehicle fleet

Ausgrid CEO Marc England, and Tim Knoych, Acting Head of Supply Chain demo the new EV heavy vehicles

12 Feb 2024

Ausgrid’s Head of EVCI Nick Black spoke to 7 News at the recent ‘Everything Electric’ Expo.

He said there's an urgent need for increased charging infrastructure to meet likely demand for EVs in the future (with more chargers also encouraging increased EV uptake). Ausgrid estimates 30,000 curb side chargers are needed in NSW by 2030, with 11,000 of them in Ausgrid’s patch.

EV fleet efficiencies support emissions targets

Ausgrid made fleet efficiencies to support our emissions targets by completing evaluation and selection programs for hybrid and electric vehicle options available in the market. As assets become due for renewal, all passenger vehicles will be replaced with hybrid or electric vehicles to directly reduce emissions by a minimum of 40%.

Ausgrid has 93 EV vehicles. Three heavy trucks introduced in March 2024 are expected to help Ausgrid reduce diesel consumption by 10,000 litres. Find out more about our Emissions Targets in our Sustainability Report.

Arena-Origin Smart Charging Trial

Ausgrid is a project partner with the Origin Energy EV Smart Charging Trial. The trial successfully installed more than 150 smart charging EV chargers across Australia, which were used to test different scenarios of unmanaged, incentivised, and managed charging models with Origin’s customers. In June 2022 Origin released the ARENA lessons learnt report ahead of a final report expected in 2023.

Race 2030 Project

Partners of the Race 2030 Electric Vehicle Program are working together to research the benefits barriers and enablers of integration of EVs.

Transport contributes about 20% of Australia’s emissions, so electrifying transportation is critical in achieving net zero. Ausgrid supports the Strategic EV Integration research partnership to identify and demonstrate approaches to facilitate more EV uptake. The research builds on work across Ausgrid to ready the network for electric vehicles while supporting a fair transition to net zero.
