Community Batteries

Community Battery Pilot

Ausgrid is excited to work with the Australian Government and local communities to deliver more community batteries. As we ramp up renewable generation, we will need more energy storage throughout the system to provide secure and affordable energy for Australian businesses and households.

Ausgrid has been awarded grants to deliver six community batteries in the following suburbs - Bondi/Bondi Beach, Breakfast Point/Cabarita, Cammeray, Narara, Warriewood and North Epping.

Ausgrid identified potential battery sites within the eligible locations and consulted local residents and the community on the proposed sites, the artwork for the batteries and the benefits communities were interested in. You can view our community consultations at Your Say Community Engagement Hub.

Cabarita Community Battery

The community batteries will be installed at:

  • Kendall Reserve, Cabarita
  • Mitchell Park, Narara
  • North Epping Oval, North Epping
  • Ausgrid substation on Metcalfe St, Cammeray
  • Corner Honeyeater Grove and Blue Wren Way, Warriewood
  • Opposite Thomas Hogan Reserve, Bondi

For this pilot, Ausgrid is exploring new ways to share the value of community batteries with local communities. Community batteries can help increase the renewable energy available to local communities and prepare the grid for increased electricity demand from electric vehicle charging. Ausgrid will install either a co-located public electric vehicle charging station or solar PV on a local community facility.

We understand communities want to know more about community batteries and Ausgrid will be developing an online information hub to show how the batteries work.
